Russia's vast and in many areas empty. An easy to fix car is a good thing.

Why mess with that perfect shape?

whoooooo! I'd honestly rather have a Tsuru than a base 3 series, A4 fwd, C class, or IS 250.

Looks extremely derrivative of the mustang below it.
You'd think the Japanese would have been able to style their own cars by 78.

That was a cool bit, but I couldn't help but feel when I watched it for the first time just how vast that parade would be if they did that for the USA, Germany, Japan, or China. Not that it matters.

I was just being a bit facetious. In actual fact, I'm a staunch defender of the British motor industry both past and present, and loved that episode. I owned (and thoroughly enjoyed) an SD1, too.
Still, it's a shame that there's no big 'home-grown' marque any more, as there was in the days of Rover and friends.

mmmm, even in that dark silver they offer..... strong want... but the Tsuru is a work horse legend!

Are there more beetles or tsurus in Mexico?

There wouldn't be enough room. Especially since a good chunk of foreign cars sold here are built here in the U.S. as well.

Tough call. Currently, im inclined to say Tsuru
![]() 09/21/2014 at 22:12 |

Vauxhall sort of, and Mini sort of. But there isn't anything TRULY from those islands for the common man that isn't under some foreign control.

very good question, I'll still have to with the Vocho. They made them up to 2003 I think. But the Tsuru is still out....idk, I'll guess Vocho. The Tida might be the new Tsuru in the near future, those are everywhere.

Truth

Yeah, that was what I was meaning. I grew up on Triumphs and Jaguars and the like (not that I'm of that generation – my parents just always bought old cars), and there was a distinct 'Britishness' to them that even the Vauxhalls and Brit Fords of the time didn't really have. Maybe it's just my own biases, but I miss that.
![]() 09/21/2014 at 22:19 |

That's what I'm saying you try to do that here the logistics would be a nightmare because there would be so many vehicles of all kinds.

The war had a lot to do with changes with Vauxhall

I'm conflicted now, but I'll go with what you said even if Vicente said the opposite. Beetles are everywhere.

Okay, I have to say that this gets a pass under the "if it isn't broke, domo arigato" rule.

The history of the British motor industry fascinates me, with the impact, both social and industrial, of wartime production, and the postwar recovery. I'm actually considering doing a history Ph.D on the subject!

![]() 09/21/2014 at 22:48 |

So they had to bring every single model of every singe car just to fill one street. Not very impressive.
![]() 09/21/2014 at 22:51 |

History is always a fascinating topic. Knowing the past helps understand why things are the way they are.
![]() 09/21/2014 at 23:26 |
|
The ones they brought were pretty impressive. How many F1 teams would be in line if the U.S. had one?
![]() 09/21/2014 at 23:27 |
|
None but they would have 50 Nascar teams.
![]() 09/21/2014 at 23:30 |
|
With the exact same car.
![]() 09/21/2014 at 23:39 |
|
They are not the exact same car. There are Ford, Chevy and Toyota teams. Those 3 can be further divided into Sprint cup, Nationwide and truck series all of which use different cars.
![]() 09/21/2014 at 23:41 |
|
Within the series they are the same size, have the same displacement/power, look basically the same, have the same engine setup, and go the same speed. They might as well put em in a copier.
![]() 09/21/2014 at 23:48 |
|
So they are just like F1 cars.
![]() 09/21/2014 at 23:52 |
|
Shit just got heavy.(I'm a fan of F1) I bet he is going to say they look different which in reality their differences are about as much as the variances from 1 nascar brand to another.

I can't see the Britain 2009 photo, just a black square. Is that the joke, they make nothing?

Different turbo setups, different aero tactics, different fueling tactics, etc.

Arguably, all the cars from 1978 are prettier.
![]() 09/22/2014 at 04:30 |

LOL! Even though it still produces cars. Nevertheless how awesome these are it still a good & laughable picture going from that SD1 to this:
![]() 09/22/2014 at 04:55 |

actually Britain makes a shit ton of cars, but mostly for everyone else.
![]() 09/22/2014 at 08:46 |
|
In hindsight, maybe that's what I should have posted.
That said, for all the SD1's futuristic looks, its design was thoroughly stuck in the past. Live axle, rear drum brakes, pushrod V8. Its predecessor, the P6, was far more technologically advanced.
![]() 09/22/2014 at 08:50 |
|
As Leon711 said, that's correct. With Rover now in Chinese hands, the only really 'British' car manufacturers are the small outfits like Morgan and McLaren.
![]() 09/22/2014 at 09:56 |
|
Are you insane? they look similar in that they are both silver...
![]() 09/22/2014 at 10:43 |
|
I was referring to the Mustang 2 and whatever-that-thing-is from 1978.
Bumpers, side profile, and the grill, are all extremely similar.
The japanese just relocated the turn signals and the mirror from mustang 2 as far as I can tell.

The Black screen of nothing is best when it comes to the British car manufacturers. You just convinced me ;-)
A TR5/6 or a big Healey will be owned in the future though!
![]() 09/22/2014 at 12:22 |

The British definitely knew how to do straight-six engines. I'd love one of those, too – I've had a lot of experience with the Triumph six in the 2000 and 2500 saloons, and it's a fantastic engine, especially in fuel-injected form.
